Concreters Penola

The terra rossa around Penola is a red-brown clay-loam sitting over a limestone base. It's what makes the Coonawarra's wine so distinctive — and it's also a reactive soil that moves with the seasons, swelling when wet and shrinking when dry. Concrete laid on it without proper detailing is a prime candidate for cracking.

The good news is that the limestone beneath is firm, and reactive clay is entirely manageable when you build for it. We compact the base, reinforce to control movement, cut control joints in the right places and set drainage falls that keep water away from the slab — the combination that lets concrete ride out the soil's seasonal movement.

Penola is a heritage town with a big story — the home of Australia's first saint through the Mary MacKillop Penola Centre, the historic Petticoat Lane, and the grand Yallum Park nearby. Just out of town, the Coonawarra wine region runs north with its cellar doors and vineyards. We work across all of it.
