Driveways That Add Value & Last Decades

Your driveway is the first thing people see and one of the hardest-working surfaces on your property. Done right, a concrete driveway lasts 30–50 years, lifts your home's kerb appeal, and shrugs off cars, trailers and Limestone Coast weather with almost no maintenance. Done poorly — skimped base, no falls, missing joints — it cracks, pools water and looks tired within a couple of years.

Mount Gambier Concrete builds driveways the proper way. We prepare and compact the base, set the falls so water drains away, reinforce to spec and cut control joints where they belong. You get a written fixed-price quote before we start, a crew that turns up, and a finish you choose — from a clean plain broom finish to exposed aggregate or coloured and stamped concrete.

How We Build a Driveway That Doesn't Crack

Most driveway failures come down to what you can't see — the base, the falls, the reinforcement and the joints. Here's the process we follow on every driveway, every time.

  1. 01

    Set out & excavate

We mark out the driveway, strip topsoil and dig to the right depth so the finished level sits correctly against your house, garage and the road.

  2. 02

    Prepare & compact the base

A driveway is only as good as what's under it. We build up and compact a proper road-base sub-grade — the single biggest factor in whether concrete cracks or lasts.

  3. 03

    Set the falls for drainage

We set the falls so water runs away from your house and off the driveway, not into pools that undermine the slab and cause problems down the track.

  4. 04

    Form up & reinforce

We set the formwork to line and level, and lay steel mesh reinforcement on chairs at the correct height so it actually does its job of controlling cracking.

  5. 05

    Pour, screed & finish

We pour to the right thickness (typically 100mm for cars, more for heavy vehicles), screed level, and finish to the surface you've chosen — broom, trowel, exposed aggregate or decorative.

  6. 06

    Cut joints & cure

We cut control joints in the right places to manage shrinkage, then cure the concrete properly so it gains full strength. We'll tell you exactly when you can walk and drive on it.

The driveway pricing promise

You get a written, fixed-price quote covering excavation, base prep, formwork, steel, concrete, finishing and clean-up. The price we quote is the price you pay — no surprise variations once we're underway. Want to understand the numbers first? Read our concrete driveway cost guide.

What Your Fixed-Price Quote Includes

The most common driveway complaint isn't the concrete — it's a cheap quote that quietly left out the base prep, the steel or the old-slab removal, then reappeared as a "variation." We itemise the whole job so you can compare like with like.

Included in your quote

  • Excavation and removal of spoil
  • Base build-up and compaction
  • Formwork set to line and level
  • Steel mesh reinforcement
  • The concrete at the right thickness
  • Your chosen finish (broom, exposed aggregate, coloured)
  • Control joints cut to manage cracking
  • Clean-up on completion

What affects the price

  • Size, shape and how many edges/curves
  • Thickness needed for the vehicles using it
  • The finish — plain is cheapest, decorative more
  • Removing and carting an old driveway
  • Site access, slope and ground conditions
  • The council crossover, if one is needed

Concrete Driveway FAQs

How much does a concrete driveway cost in Mount Gambier?
It depends on size, thickness, finish and site prep, but plain concrete is the most affordable option and exposed aggregate, coloured or stamped finishes cost more per square metre. We give you a written fixed-price quote for your exact driveway. See our concrete driveway cost guide for the typical per-square-metre ranges.
How thick should my concrete driveway be?
A standard residential driveway for cars is generally 100mm thick over a compacted base with steel mesh reinforcement. If trucks, caravans, boats or heavy vehicles will use it, we increase that to 125–150mm. We set the thickness to suit your ground and how the driveway will be used.
Do I need council approval for a driveway crossover?
The driveway on your own land usually doesn't need approval, but the crossover between the road and your boundary is council-controlled and generally needs a permit from the City of Mount Gambier or your district council. We can guide you through the process and build the crossover to their requirements.
How long before I can drive on my new driveway?
You can usually walk on it after 24–48 hours and drive a normal car on it after about 7 days. Heavier vehicles should wait around 28 days, when the concrete has gained most of its strength. We give you exact timings for your pour.
Can you replace my old cracked driveway?
Yes. We break out and remove the old concrete, re-prepare and compact the base, and pour a new driveway — with removal and cartage included in your fixed-price quote so there are no surprises.
