Concreters Mount Gambier

Most of Mount Gambier is underlain by Gambier Limestone, with volcanic ash, tuff and basaltic soils around the craters that give the area its rich, dark, fertile topsoil. In most places this makes for firm, competent ground to build on — limestone provides excellent bearing where it's shallow and sound.

The catch is karst. The same limestone that supports the city is riddled with caves, sinkholes and cavities — think Engelbrecht Cave, the Umpherston Sinkhole and the Cave Garden right in the CBD. In practical terms that means the odd soft spot, old fill or void can turn up on a site, which is exactly why we assess and prepare the base properly before any pour rather than assuming the ground is uniform.

Mount Gambier famously has no surface rivers. Rain soaks down through the limestone into the aquifer, and stormwater across the city is often disposed of through drainage bores rather than open drains. That makes getting the falls right on a driveway or slab even more important than usual — water needs to run cleanly to legal drainage, not pool against the house or sit under the slab where it undermines the base.

It's a point that separates concrete that lasts from concrete that fails early. On every Mount Gambier job we set the falls deliberately, keep water moving away from the building, and tie in with the site's stormwater so the finished surface drains the way it should for decades.
