The Look of Stone, the Toughness of Concrete
Exposed aggregate is plain concrete's good-looking sibling. Instead of a flat grey surface, the top layer of cement is washed back to reveal the natural stone within — a textured, colourful, premium finish that's become the go-to for driveways, patios and pool surrounds across the Limestone Coast. It looks like a feature and wears like a driveway.
Because the surface is textured, it's naturally non-slip — ideal for driveways on a slope, around pools and on pathways. It's low-maintenance, holds up to sun and salt air, and adds serious value to a home. And it's a genuine gap in the local market: quality decorative concrete is exactly what buyers in Mount Gambier, Robe and the coastal towns want, and few local concreters offer it well.

Done Properly, From Base to Seal
A great exposed aggregate finish still relies on all the fundamentals of good concreting — a compacted base, correct falls, reinforcement and control joints. Get those wrong and no finish will save it. We do the groundwork properly, then pour, expose the aggregate to an even, consistent depth, and seal it to bring out the colour and protect it.
The result is a surface that looks sharp, grips underfoot and lasts. We'll help you choose a stone blend and colour that suits your home, give you a written fixed-price quote, and finish the job clean. If you're weighing up finishes, we can also show you coloured and stamped or polished concrete options.
Understand the cost first
Exposed aggregate sits in the middle of the decorative concrete price range. Our exposed aggregate cost guide breaks down the typical per-square-metre ranges so you know what to expect before you get a quote.
Pool Surrounds & Outdoor Living Areas
Exposed aggregate really comes into its own around pools and outdoor living areas — and it's an area a lot of local concreters simply don't do well. The textured, exposed-stone surface is naturally slip-resistant when it's wet, which is exactly what you want underfoot around a pool, on a patio or across an alfresco entertaining zone. It stays cooler and looks far more considered than plain grey concrete, and it ties the whole outdoor space together in one seamless pour.
Pool surrounds are unforgiving of poor work, though, because water and falls have to be right. We set the falls so water drains away from the pool and the house rather than pooling on the surface or running back toward the coping, detail clean edges and expansion joints around the pool shell, and finish and seal the aggregate so it stands up to splash, chlorine or salt water. Done properly, it's a seamless, low-maintenance surround that looks like part of the original design — not an afterthought.
The same finish carries through to patios, alfresco areas, entertaining zones and paths, so your driveway, backyard and pool area can share one consistent look. If you'd prefer a moulded stone or paver look instead, we can do the same outdoor zones in coloured or stamped concrete.

How We Lay Exposed Aggregate
A great exposed aggregate finish is equal parts groundwork and timing. The base has to be right like any concrete, and then the exposing has to happen in the correct window to reveal the stone evenly. Here's our process, step by step.
- 01
Set out & prepare the base
We mark out the area, excavate, and build up and compact a proper sub-base. A decorative finish on a poor base still cracks — so the groundwork is no different to a quality plain pour.
- 02
Form up, set falls & reinforce
We set the formwork to line and level with the falls needed for drainage, and lay steel mesh reinforcement on chairs at the correct height to control cracking.
- 03
Pour the decorative mix & screed
We place the concrete — with your chosen aggregate blend through it — and screed it level, ready for finishing.
- 04
Float & wait for the window
We float the surface, then watch the concrete closely. Exposing too early or too late ruins the finish, so timing this window is where experience counts.
- 05
Expose the aggregate
We wash back the top layer of cement paste (or use a surface retarder) to reveal the stone to an even, consistent depth across the whole surface.
- 06
Wash, etch & clean
We wash and, where needed, lightly acid-etch the surface to remove excess paste and even out the finish, so the stone shows cleanly and uniformly.
- 07
Cure & seal
We cure the concrete properly, then apply a sealer that brings out the colour of the stone, resists stains and protects the surface. We tell you when it can take foot and vehicle traffic.
